Gef the Talking Mongoose: Something Living Inside the House
In 1931, the Irving family began hearing strange animal noises behind the wooden walls of their isolated farmhouse on the Isle of Man. According to the family, those sounds developed into speech. The voice called itself Gef, said it was a mongoose, and began taking an interest in everything happening around him. From an opening in the ceiling, he could read James Irving’s newspaper and offer comments on the news.
The Irvings left him food and learned which records he liked on the gramophone. They described glimpses of a small, yellow-furred creature, brief encounters close enough to feel his fingers and teeth. But Gef also threatened them, watched from places they could not see, and called himself an earthbound spirit. Margaret considered whether a human intelligence inhabited the animal they had come to live with.
As word spread beyond Cashen’s Gap, visitors climbed the track to the farmhouse. Some described hearing a voice while every member of the family was in view. Others waited through silence. Gef could interrupt the household for hours, then refuse to speak when someone came looking for him. Decades after leaving the island, Voirrey Irving still stood by her account. She remembered the creature and the conversations behind the woodwork. She wished he had left her family alone.
Midnight Signals blends history, folklore, and dramatized storytelling. Some names, places, and events are fictionalized or illustrative. Characters are fictional, and any resemblance to real persons, living or dead, is coincidental.

1
00:00:00.440 --> 00:00:11.220
[gentle music] James Irving had company when he read the newspaper. According to his family, a voice above his shoulder could follow the print and interrupt with comments on the news.
2
00:00:11.960 --> 00:00:22.860
The reader was looking through a hole in the ceiling from a space where James couldn't get a proper look at him. The Irvings had learned to leave food overhead and answer when he spoke. They called him Gef.
3
00:00:23.500 --> 00:00:33.800
By then, they knew his appetite and his temper, though they still couldn't agree on what was living inside their house. Their home stood above Dalby on the western side of the Isle of Man.
4
00:00:34.380 --> 00:00:45.320
A rough track climbed toward the farmhouse known as Cashen's Gap. Inside, wooden boards lined the stone walls against the wind, leaving narrow spaces between the rooms and the masonry.
5
00:00:46.120 --> 00:00:55.960
A small animal could move through those gaps without entering a room. The family might hear something close beside them, then farther along the wall, with nothing coming into view.
6
00:00:57.880 --> 00:01:07.060
James had once made a comfortable living in Liverpool selling musical instruments. Business reversals brought him to farming, but the land at Cashen's Gap yielded little money.
7
00:01:07.780 --> 00:01:20.740
In 1931, he was living there with his wife, Margaret, and their 13-year-old daughter, Voirrey. The older children had left home. Petroleum lamps supplied the light, and the family had a gramophone for entertainment.
8
00:01:21.280 --> 00:01:31.500
Their sheepdog was called Mona. That autumn, they began hearing another animal behind the boards. The Irvings describe blowing, spitting, and growling that kept them awake.
9
00:01:32.180 --> 00:01:43.680
James tried answering with animal calls, and whatever was behind the lining copied him. He tried other calls. Those came back, too. Eventually, he could name an animal and hear its cry in response.
10
00:01:44.340 --> 00:01:55.460
Voirrey tried nursery rhymes, which the creature repeated in a high, squeaky voice. They gave it words and waited for it to say them back, speaking toward the wood as they might speak to a child learning to talk.
11
00:01:56.280 --> 00:02:07.640
The replies developed into questions and conversations. The voice could interrupt, address someone by name, or complain about what was happening in the room. James began writing down the exchanges.
12
00:02:08.199 --> 00:02:21.880
At first, the family called their companion Jack. Later, he became Gef, spelled G-E-F, and pronounced Gef. He told them he had understood human speech for years but hadn't been able to speak until they taught him.
13
00:02:22.840 --> 00:02:33.840
Gef said he was a mongoose from India, born near Delhi in 1852. That made him nearly 80 when he began speaking to the family. His other explanations were harder to reconcile.
14
00:02:34.340 --> 00:02:46.220
He called himself an earthbound spirit and a ghost in the form of a weasel, then denied being a spirit at all. Sometimes he refused to say what he was. He also announced, "I am the fifth dimension."
15
00:02:47.040 --> 00:02:58.920
At first, the family were afraid of him. Gef spoke about the harm he could do if he chose, including killing all three of them. James decided to move Voirrey's bed into his own bedroom for safety.
16
00:02:59.580 --> 00:03:06.160
While the family discussed the arrangement, the voice interrupted from behind the boards. It would follow her wherever they moved her.
17
00:03:07.560 --> 00:03:12.480
James brought furniture against the bedroom door that night, adding a heavy weight to the barricade.
18
00:03:13.220 --> 00:03:23.600
In his account, the upper part of the door began bending inward as though something were pressing hard against it from outside. The door held. Gef announced that he was coming in.
19
00:03:24.600 --> 00:03:33.080
A few seconds later, a heavy pot of ointment struck the bedstead. It had been inside the bedroom all along, and nobody had seen a creature enter.
20
00:03:34.360 --> 00:03:43.920
Over time, the Irvings worked out arrangements that made living with him easier. They put food where he could collect it unseen, sometimes in a saucer suspended near the ceiling.
21
00:03:44.580 --> 00:03:55.380
He liked biscuits and chocolate, and Margaret became the person who fed him. Near the top of the boxed-in staircase was a space they called his sanctum, where the family heard him moving about above them.
22
00:03:56.360 --> 00:04:07.040
He contributed rabbits in return. James kept a count of the animals Gef brought back, eventually recording more than 200. His hunting was useful to a family with little money to spare.
23
00:04:07.720 --> 00:04:17.620
Gef explained his attachment to the household by saying that he followed Voirrey, Margaret fed him, and James answered his questions. He promised good luck if they treated him kindly.
24
00:04:18.160 --> 00:04:26.420
If they didn't, he could kill their poultry. He warned that he could reach the birds wherever the family put them. The gramophone could put him in a better mood.
25
00:04:26.980 --> 00:04:38.220
The family heard him singing along and bouncing his ball in time with the music. Sometimes he demanded a record, adding profanity when he felt it necessary. His favorites included Carolina Moon.
26
00:04:38.900 --> 00:04:47.580
On another occasion, he sang a rude version of Home on the Range that he said he'd learned from bus drivers. Margaret objected and told him he was no animal.
27
00:04:48.220 --> 00:05:01.740
Gef agreed with her, then announced that he was the Holy Ghost. Two teenage cousins, Harry Hall and Will Cubbon, describe visiting Gef at the farm. They didn't see him, but they could speak to him and play games.
28
00:05:02.360 --> 00:05:13.000
From behind a wall, he guessed heads or tails when a coin was tossed. Through a hole in the attic ceiling, they played catch with a rubber ball. He also talked to them about a steamroller.
29
00:05:13.520 --> 00:05:24.980
The boys remembered less friendly behavior, too, spitting and a threat to urinate on their heads. James described a night when Gef began talking around 11 and kept going until 3 in the morning.
30
00:05:25.920 --> 00:05:36.400
James asked him to leave so he could sleep. Gef refused. He could stay until 5 if he pleased. On another occasion, he spent half an hour sighing and groaning.
31
00:05:37.180 --> 00:05:49.040
When he finally stopped, he admitted he'd done it for devilment. Whispering didn't help the family keep a conversation private. James said Gef could detect a whisper from several yards away and repeat what had been said.
32
00:05:49.880 --> 00:05:54.340
Margaret described him watching while she undressed, calling out the garments as she removed them.
33
00:05:54.980 --> 00:06:06.192
The voice could intrude at any time, whether the family were inviting an answer or trying to have a conversation without him. James described reading a Liverpool newspaper when Gef called out in alarm about a name.
34
00:06:06.932 --> 00:06:18.332
James couldn't see anything troubling on the page. The voice directed him to the deaths. There, after the name of a man who had died, was the shortened form, Gef. James hadn't noticed it.
35
00:06:18.992 --> 00:06:28.572
Gef had found a version of his own name in the death notices and was insisting that James look at it. Voirrey described a small creature with yellowish fur and a bushy tail.
36
00:06:29.232 --> 00:06:43.212
James sometimes saw movement along a beam or the end of a tail disappearing around a corner. The family also described physical contact. In May 1932, James wrote that Gef had taken hold of his finger several times.
37
00:06:43.892 --> 00:06:55.432
Margaret had put her fingers into his mouth and felt his teeth. Voirrey tried photographing him outdoors. One picture showed a small form perched on a fence, which she identified as Gef.
38
00:06:56.352 --> 00:07:07.532
James said Margaret had pressed for the photographs and that Gef obeyed her only within limits. When an artist made a drawing from the family's descriptions, Gef complained that it looked more like a llama.
39
00:07:08.132 --> 00:07:19.352
He had objections to being seen as well as being drawn. He warned that anyone who looked at him could become petrified, unable to move. James wondered whether Gef could appear in more than one shape.
40
00:07:19.972 --> 00:07:27.792
He described seeing a large striped cat near the house while Margaret was away. He loaded his gun and followed it through an open gateway into a field.
41
00:07:28.752 --> 00:07:39.052
He was only a few seconds behind, but when he reached the grass, he couldn't find the cat anywhere. That evening, he told Margaret what had happened. Gef interrupted.
42
00:07:39.832 --> 00:07:47.932
According to James, the voice said that the cat had been him. Margaret considered the possibility of a human intelligence in an animal's form.
43
00:07:48.572 --> 00:07:58.072
She had fed him and touched him, but the word mongoose didn't account for the personality she encountered. Gef understood a rebuke and could answer it with an insult or a joke.
44
00:07:58.892 --> 00:08:04.472
He knew when someone was frightened and how to keep them that way. He told Margaret that she would never know what he was.
45
00:08:05.612 --> 00:08:17.632
Nandor Fodor, a psychical investigator who later spent a week with the Irvings, heard and saw nothing of Gef himself. He eventually considered a haunting arising through James' unconscious mind.
46
00:08:18.332 --> 00:08:26.292
In that interpretation, James needn't be knowingly performing a voice. A presence could emerge through him and speak back as something separate.
47
00:08:27.072 --> 00:08:34.152
Fodor connected Gef with the man who asked him questions and kept writing down his answers, while also being subjected to his threats.
48
00:08:35.132 --> 00:08:46.212
The Irvings said he accompanied them away from the farmhouse, sometimes keeping to the far side of a hedge while they walked. His voice traveled alongside them, continuing the conversation out of sight.
49
00:08:47.112 --> 00:08:56.032
He also described excursions of his own, riding beneath buses and returning with gossip. James began checking information that Gef brought back.
50
00:08:56.892 --> 00:09:08.292
Among the reports were details about a bus driver's upstairs rooms, including belongings that couldn't be seen from the road. Later, James and an old friend, Charles Morrison, met the driver in Peel.
51
00:09:08.932 --> 00:09:18.612
They asked whether he believed in Gef. In James' account, the driver said he had to. James knew what was inside those rooms, although no strangers had been admitted.
52
00:09:19.232 --> 00:09:30.052
He couldn't understand how the information had reached the farm. A bus conductor had a more immediate complaint. His dinner had disappeared, six sandwiches wrapped in a brown paper parcel.
53
00:09:30.692 --> 00:09:41.432
The paper had been slit open as though by a knife or sharp claws, and the sandwiches were gone. Speaking to Fodor afterward, the conductor blamed Gef and said he wanted to get his hands on him.
54
00:09:42.252 --> 00:09:53.872
He was angry about his missing meal and ended the conversation by jumping back aboard his bus. Newspapers had begun calling the creature the Dalby Spook, and people were making the climb to Cashen's Gap.
55
00:09:54.752 --> 00:10:03.872
Some wanted to meet the talking animal. Others arrived expecting a haunting or a trick. James showed them where Gef stayed and described their conversations.
56
00:10:04.612 --> 00:10:10.052
A visitor could sit for hours without hearing anything, then find himself addressed while preparing to leave.
57
00:10:10.912 --> 00:10:21.252
The family couldn't promise that an introduction would lead to a conversation, however much James wanted someone else to hear. When James spoke about getting a machine to record the voice, Gef objected.
58
00:10:21.872 --> 00:10:30.692
He wanted to know who was behind the plan and whether it involved the investigator, Harry Price. He refused to speak into the machine and threatened to break Price's windows.
59
00:10:31.392 --> 00:10:45.672
The proposal had turned into another argument. Gef also expressed a fear of being caught and put in a bottle. Among the early visitors was Charles Morrison's son, Arthur. He came in March 1932, hoping to expose a joke.
60
00:10:46.452 --> 00:10:55.332
In his later account, a screeching voice greeted him by name and introduced itself as an earthbound spirit. There were loud knocks from different parts of the house.
61
00:10:56.212 --> 00:11:07.152
After a while, the speaker announced that he'd vanished. He returned that evening with a threat to keep Arthur awake all night. Arthur asked what he'd done to deserve it. The voice called him a doubter.
62
00:11:08.292 --> 00:11:19.532
Around 9:00, Arthur was dozing in bed when he heard movement underneath him. He thought it might be a rat or mouse and peered below the bed. He described two eyes smaller than a cat's.
63
00:11:20.012 --> 00:11:31.192
A voice asked, "Now do you believe?" It warned him against upsetting James with skeptical remarks and made a spitting noise. Animal sounds disturbed him at intervals throughout the night.
64
00:11:32.152 --> 00:11:44.292
In the morning, Arthur apologized to James for dismissing the reports before his visit. He remained convinced that he'd encountered something genuine. Harry Price heard nothing when he visited in 1935.
65
00:11:44.972 --> 00:11:56.592
Margaret called for Gef, and Price appealed toward the walls. A scratch or a squeak would do. He even invited Gef to throw something. There was silence. Price suspected a family hoax.
66
00:11:57.172 --> 00:12:09.252
The main conventional explanation was a disguised voice, possibly Voirrey's, carried through the gaps behind the lining. Hair submitted as Gef's was examined and identified as dog hair, matching Mona's.
67
00:12:09.976 --> 00:12:18.596
Price believed members of the household were cooperating. One of his own colleagues, Captain Dennis, described hearing the voice while all three Irvings were visible.
68
00:12:19.436 --> 00:12:29.916
James and Margaret were indoors where he could observe them. Through the window, he could see Voirrey feeding the hens in the stockyard. From behind the boarding in the front room came remarks about his clothes.
69
00:12:30.556 --> 00:12:39.856
Dennis accepted the encounter as genuine. On a separate occasion, he and James were well outside the house when he heard Gef nearby, although Voirrey was indoors.
70
00:12:40.796 --> 00:12:50.276
During another visit, Dennis heard screams and heavy knocks moving rapidly around the farmhouse. He went upstairs and found Voirrey's bedroom door fastened from the outside.
71
00:12:50.976 --> 00:13:02.756
As he descended toward the kitchen, a bottle and a china tray were thrown from the top of the stairs. The tray smashed, and he heard laughter. Dennis went back to the bedroom. The door was still fastened.
72
00:13:03.296 --> 00:13:13.456
He also tested the arrangement himself, having it secured while he was inside, and reported that he couldn't get out. After 3:00 in the morning, the disturbance reached the windows.
73
00:13:14.016 --> 00:13:24.616
Gef announced that he was going to throw pebbles at them, and Dennis heard a rattling against the glass like gravel and small stones. Margaret called for him to stop because she didn't want the windows broken.
74
00:13:25.656 --> 00:13:31.836
Voirrey was growing tired of the attention. Other children called her The Spook, and she remembered the family being shunned.
75
00:13:32.456 --> 00:13:42.036
She later said that she and Margaret would have kept the experience private, but her father wanted to tell people about it. As the years passed, Gef's appearances grew less frequent.
76
00:13:42.876 --> 00:13:55.456
Voirrey eventually left to do war work in Douglas, returning to the farm at weekends. She later moved to England with the same employer. James died in 1945, and Margaret sold Cashen's Gap.
77
00:13:56.216 --> 00:14:05.576
A later owner identified an animal killed on the property as the famous mongoose, but Voirrey rejected that identification. The farmhouse was eventually demolished.
78
00:14:06.096 --> 00:14:14.796
The hole above James' newspaper and the wooden spaces surrounding the bedrooms disappeared with it. Nobody could return to those rooms and sit where the family had listened.
79
00:14:15.996 --> 00:14:26.956
In an interview published in 1970, Voirrey still denied that the affair had been a trick. She wanted her whereabouts kept private, afraid the story would follow her into her working life.
80
00:14:27.696 --> 00:14:37.936
She felt it had kept her from marrying. She couldn't imagine explaining what had happened to a husband's family. Asked whether Gef had really been a mongoose, she couldn't give a confident answer.
81
00:14:38.776 --> 00:14:51.776
She remembered a small animal and its high voice and wished it had left the Irvings alone. She lived until 2005 without retracting her account. James had described a recurring exchange from the early months.
82
00:14:52.336 --> 00:15:04.216
He would be in bed while Gef talked, looking around the wooden lining and trying to locate the voice. Sometimes his gaze settled on a spot, and the talking abruptly stopped. Gef ordered him to turn his head.
83
00:15:04.976 --> 00:15:17.176
Until James looked away, he wouldn't continue. Months later, when they were friendlier, James asked why looking at that particular place had caused such an objection. Gef answered, "I can't stand your eyes."
